Professor of Classics and of Theater and Performance Studies
Rush Rehm, PhD ’95, graduated from Princeton University with a degree in creative writing and classics. On a Fulbright scholarship, he received masters in classical studies at Melbourne University, translating Aeschylus’ Oresteia for the stage. He later earned his PhD in drama and humanities from Stanford University, including a year doing research at the Institute for Classical Studies in London. After teaching for several years at Emory University, he returned to Stanford, where he currently serves as professor of classics and theater and performance studies. As an actor and director, Rush has worked professionally with many U.S. regional theaters, and internationally, including many productions of Shakespeare, and is founder and artistic director of Stanford Repertory Theater. Rush has written several books on Greek tragedy, including Euripides’ Electra, Understanding Greek Tragic Theatre; The Play of Space: Spatial Transformation in Greek Tragedy; Marriage to Death: The Conflation of Wedding and Funeral Rituals in Greek Tragedy, and Radical Theatre: Greek Tragedy and the Modern World. He is the recipient of the Theatre Bay Area award for Outstanding Direction and Stanford’s Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for Outstanding Service to Undergraduate Education. An inveterate traveler, Rush has lived in England, Denmark, Greece, Australia, and Egypt, and traveled extensively in France, Italy, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand, Cuba, Nicaragua, and South Africa.
