Along the way, visit a Maasai village as we drive across the Maasai Steppe into vast acacia-covered plains and several local settlements to reach the park. This evening enjoy a welcome reception with fellow travelers before dinner.

Experience more of this outstanding natural preserve, searching for wildlife with the help of our eagle-eyed guides as we travel through the rolling savannah lands of the Maasai. As the sun sets, return to our lodge for a refreshing swim in the infinity pool. This evening sip a sundowner cocktail by the lodge’s 700-year-old baobab tree and dine in the nearby boma (a small enclosure), where we are treated to traditional Maasai songs and dances.

  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Enjoy a hearty breakfast at our lodge before setting off on our two-hour drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Highlands, stopping en route at Mto Wa Mbu for a tour through the Maasai village aboard tuk-tuks, the locals’ main form of transportation. Learn how to prepare traditional banana beer and sample a local dish prepared especially for us before continuing our journey through Maasai country. Only the Maasai are permitted to live within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area’s boundaries, and they are often seen throughout the area, clad in their distinctive bright blue and red clothing and tending their domestic goats and cattle. Upon arrival late this afternoon at our lodge perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, settle in and admire the breathtaking views of the crater and the crater floor almost 2,000 feet below us.

  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Today’s game drive is like no other as we visit one of the most dramatic safari destinations on Earth. The intact caldera offers us remarkable views of animals in their natural element. This morning drive into the crater to spend the day on its floor in search of Africa’s Big Five—Cape buffalo, leopards, elephants, lions and rhinos. More than 30,000 animals inhabit this area, including black rhinos, cheetahs, monkeys, hyenas, elands and antelope. Return to our lodge in the late afternoon, then head to our private viewing decks to watch for wildlife far below before joining our group for dinner.

  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area / Serengeti National Park

Check out of our lodge and drive along the crater rim before descending the outer slopes onto the vast plains of the Serengeti, which covers almost 6,000 square miles. Today’s driving time is six to seven hours with lots of game sightings along the way. Stop at Olduvai Gorge, the “cradle of mankind,” where Louis and Mary Leakey made major discoveries of hominids. After a picnic lunch, continue into the Western Corridor of the Serengeti. The terrain consists of grassy savannahs, kopjes (small rock outcrops), woodlands and riverine forests. Depending on weather and timing, we may catch the beginnings of the great wildebeest migration. Dine this evening at our new home for the next three nights, a luxury safari camp that features tented rooms set on a platform.

  • Serengeti National Park

Spend the morning exploring the vast plains of the Serengeti on a game drive that allows us to keep looking for the Big Five and expand our search list to include Thomson’s gazelles, giraffes, ostriches and impalas. Head back to the camp for lunch or take a picnic lunch into the savannah to allow for more game-viewing time and return to our camp later in the day. Back at camp cool off in the swimming pool or take in the views from our verandas before regrouping for dinner.

    Accommodations:

    Kirawira Serena Camp

Included meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Serengeti National Park

Today experience a full-day game drive, with the choice of a picnic lunch or stopping for lunch back at the camp.
