At Last Count: 1,933

The number of heart transplants performed at Stanford Hospital as of December 2017. The first of those transplants—which was also the first in the United States—was done by cardiothoracic surgeon Norman Shumway 50 years ago. Shumway’s breakthrough, which Stanford commemorated in January, spurred rapid advancements in the procedure that today results in a one-year survival rate of more than 80 percent.
