Artist and marine scientist Ethan Estess (M.S. & B.S. Earth Systems '12) will take us on a virtual tour of his art studio in Santa Cruz where he turns ocean rubbish into internationally acclaimed works of art.

Estess studied tunas and sharks at Hopkins Marine Station while working on his undergrad and masters degrees, and after graduating he worked for the Monterey Bay Aquarium leading a collaborative tuna research program in Japan. Ethan's artworks draw extensively upon experiences and cultural insights garnered through this fieldwork, and his goal is to create aesthetically-engaging works that emotionally connect viewers to ocean issues.

He is the founder of Countercurrent, a public art non-profit that has reached millions with messages of ocean stewardship through a series of giant/interactive wave sculptures made from plastic marine debris.
