Mitigating racial disparities with data science (5:00pm Pacific)

Event Details

Thu, April 22, 2021
05:00PM - 06:15PM
Registration Period:
Catherine McMillan

In an event focused on examining racial disparities across various segments of contemporary society, Stanford lecturer Anthony Kinslow II (MS ’15, PhD ’19) will moderate a conversation with computational social scientist Sharad Goel, assistant professor of management science and engineering, and Allison Koenecke, a PhD candidate in the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME). Goel is also the founder and faculty director of the Stanford Computational Policy Lab, a lab that uses technical innovation as a step in addressing unfair systems and practices. The event will highlight the work done in two of the lab’s projects.

The Stanford Open Policing Project uses data-driven approaches to analyze policing practices across the country. Its findings have empowered policymakers across the country to advocate for reform in policing.

The Equitable Speech Recognition project focuses on automated speech recognition (ASR). Be it in cars, digital devices, medical settings or assistive technology, millions of us routinely rely on automated voice systems, which help us manage tasks more efficiently, more safely, and more reliably. By demonstrating that commercial ASR systems contain substantial error rates for Black speakers, Koenecke’s research has exposed the severe shortcomings of this powerful tool and the need for more diverse datasets.

In this discussion, Goel and Koenecke will discuss their methods for evaluating disparities, describe the impacts of those disparities and the interventions they have proposed, and argue that much more can be done to improve existing systems. Questions may be submitted for consideration ahead of the event, using this google form.

This is the second event in Stanford Engineering’s three-part faculty speaker series titled Engineering For All. The series aims to explore how engineering can become more inclusive in education and in design.
