Presented to Monterey Bay Stanford Club by Robert Pierce, Curator, Monterey Museum of Art

Early twentieth century artist Francis J. McComas (1874-1938) was once placed among California's greatest artists and an international art world superstar, but he was not well studied after his death. Today, his stunning paintings are now considered masterpieces of a new style and dynamic examples of early modernism. Robert Pierce, art historian and guest curator of the exhibit will lead us through the journey and the work of this extremely talented California artist.

The presenter Robert Pierce is a curator and art scholar in Chicago, Illinois. Since 2013, he has specialized in paintings of the Early California period, circa 1890-1930. He is the recipient of the 2019 San Francisco Art Institute Masters Fellowship and 2020 La Mirada Cultural Center Scholar-in-Residence. In 2016, Robert founded Pierce Art Advisory, a boutique art consultancy dedicated to historical art research, acquisition, and conservation. Robert is a Graduate Fellow at the Institute for Curatorial Research and Practice at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the guest curator for Francis McComas: Rediscovering California’s First Modernist, currently on exhibition at the Monterey Museum of Art.
