We will discuss Shuggie Bain: A Novel by Douglas Stuart. This winner of the Booker Prize and finalist for the National Book Award about (per Amazon) is "a heartbreaking story of addiction, sexuality, and love... and an epic portrayal of a working-class family... Hugh “Shuggie” Bain is a sweet and lonely boy who spends his 1980s childhood in run-down public housing in Glasgow, Scotland. His mother Agnes is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings… Agnes finds increasing solace in drink, and she drains away the lion’s share of each week’s benefits—all the family has to live on—on cans of extra-strong lager hidden in handbags and poured into tea mugs. Agnes’s older children abandon Shuggie to care for her while he struggles with a secret that all but him can see.”

We considered other books, including (in order):

  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
  • When Books Went to War: The Stories That Helped Us Win World War II by Molly Guptill Manning
