Join us for an event with Alka Joshi ’80 as we discuss her 10-year journey to publish her debut novel The Henna Artist, now a New York Times bestseller and Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick.

In 1955, as India rebuilds itself post-independence, Lakshmi Shastri builds an independent life as a celebrated henna artist to the wealthy matrons of Jaipur. But when the husband she deserted 13 years ago in a faraway village shows up at her doorstep with a  sister she didn’t know she had, her carefully constructed life is threatened. In Lakshmi’s character, Joshi reimagines a life for her mother in which she has the ability to make the decisions that determine her destiny.

“[An] eloquent debut…Joshi’s evocative descriptions capture India’s sensory ambience...drawing readers deep into her moving story. Joshi masterfully balances a yearning for self-discovery with the need for familial love.” — Publishers Weekly

“Alka Joshi’s debut novel exposes a society hobbled by a rigid caste system, misogyny, superstition and age-old traditions. The smell of sandalwood, cooking fires, and tropical flowers wafts through it all, but the injustice and poverty are all but inescapable."
