Please join the Stanford Club of Houston's Fall Book Club meeting where we will read and discuss national bestseller Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward, '99, MA '00.

The recipient of the 2011 National Book Award for fiction, Ward tells the story of how one family on the Mississippi Gulf Coast endured Hurricane Katrina, as well as what they faced before the storm: extreme poverty, routine violence, survival. One week following the book club meeting, we will continue to explore the theme of climate change and its impact on local communities with a climate change panel featuring experts on climate change and those in Houston affected by its devastating consequences.

From the Washington Post:

"On one level, 'Salvage the Bones' is a simple story about a poor black family that’s about to be trashed by one of the most deadly hurricanes in U.S. history. What makes the novel so powerful, though, is the way Ward winds private passions with that menace gathering force out in the Gulf of Mexico. Without a hint of pretension, in the simple lives of these poor people living among chickens and abandoned cars, she evokes the tenacious love and desperation of classical tragedy."
