Join the Stanford Club of Houston in partnership with Station Houston for an engaging and timely talk with Sheel Tyle '12, Founder and CEO of Amplo, to discuss the growth of Houston's startup ecosystem!

As one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in the U.S., Houston is home to 21 Fortune 500 companies and plays a prominent role in international energy markets and the health care sector. Together with NASA and world-class research institutions, Houston possesses the ingredients to position itself at the forefront of the information technology era. Yet, America’s fourth-largest city has thus far been unable to leverage its strengths to develop a startup ecosystem on par with other metropolitan hubs like the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Boston.

In this talk, Sheel will explore the challenges that Houston faces, the progress it has made, and the work that needs to be done to create a sustainable startup ecosystem in Space City.

Sheel is the Founder & CEO of Amplo, a global venture capital firm helping build companies that matter. Amplo portfolio companies include Robinhood (democratizing access to financial services), Parsley Health (reinventing functional medicine), and 1Concern (artificial intelligence for disaster response). He is a member of the Board of Directors for Andela, most recently named the #1 most innovative company in Africa by Fast Company. As an angel investor, Sheel has invested in the seed or Series A of Casper, Flutterwave, Robinhood, and The Wing.

Sheel graduated from Stanford University in three years, at the age of 19. He is a World Economic Forum Global Shaper, and was on the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2013. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School and is a Member of the State Bar of Texas. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Houston Partnership and the JFK Presidential Library. In 2016, upon invitation of the White House, Sheel was part of the US delegation with President Obama on his historic visit to Cuba.
