Join the Stanford Club of Marin as we welcome Gary M. Pomerantz, lecturer in Stanford’s Graduate Program in Journalism, who will offer insights on today’s racial protests in sports. In the telling, Pomerantz turns to history, and his poignant new book, The Last Pass: Cousy, Russell, the Celtics, and What Matters in the End.

Bob Cousy and Bill Russell were a basketball duo turned dynasty with the Boston Celtics from 1957 to 1963, but the tensions of the civil rights era, and how these iconic teammates responded to them, scarred Russell with discrimination and left Cousy with deep regret that he didn't speak out publicly against the racism that Russell faced in Boston. With President Trump unleashing a barrage of tweets critical of the silent, take-a-knee protests by black athletes, Pomerantz suggests that Cousy’s story is a cautionary tale for today's NFL players who are sympathetic to their black teammates’ cause but remain mostly quiet on the subject.
