The August Book Club selection is The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Shulz. It's a 1934 collection of short stories about a merchant family in a small Austrian Galician town, based in part of the author's recollection of his own boyhood, evoking a startling blend of the real and the fantastic. The story abounds in mythical elements, introduced by means of visionary and dreamlike literary depictions.

Bruno Shulz was a Polish Jew killed by the Nazis in 1942.  He is now considered by many to have been the leading Polish writer between the two world wars.  The book was not initally published in English until 1963.  This year a new translation has been published.  The new translation can be purchased online here (contained within a collection of other writing by the author): https://www.amazon.com/Collected-Stories-Bruno-Schulz/dp/0810136600/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_img_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=NATY37MS6HFDYHX5DN8X

Alternatively the original translation is available in this collection: https://www.amazon.com/Street-Crocodiles-Stories-Penguin-Classics/dp/0143105140

Even if you have never participated in a book club before you are warmly invited to register on this site and join us. If you so desire, feel free to bake or make a snack to share, or bring a bottle of wine or a blend of tea you would like others to try.
