John Steinbeck continues to matter to us today, not least because of his deep interest in the timely subject of drought.  We will place Steinbeck’s work in the context of documentary expression during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, and in the context of the environmental history of California and the West.  Looking at The Grapes of Wrath and some less well-known works, we will uncover Steinbeck's pioneering efforts to make aridity both a subject of literature and a cause for environmentalist concern.  Speaking on this topic is Stanford faculty member Gavin Jones.

Join us for lunch and what promises to be an interesting presentation. There will also be time for Q/A.
