Developing A Culture of Expectations for College Success; A Shaw Community Center Service Opportunity

Thanks for again considering Shaw Community Center (SCC) for your day of service. SCC has served the Shaw Community for 26 years. Executive Director Sudi West is a Southeast DC native and Stanford Alumnus who recognizes both the challenges and opportunities of urban communities. As Shaw Mainstreets and the U Street BID come to fruition, we are working to enfranchise local families and youth uprooted by gentrification (Family Services, Social Justice, Academic Scholarship, Workforce Development). Our program space is an old church that needs some love -- its the historic town hall venue where Marian Anderson actually sang when denied at Constitution Hall. The affordable housing residences were built in response to destruction and civic unrest following Dr. King's assassination. USA-DC Channing Phillips Jr. grew up in this church and now mentors in our Restorative Justice program. May 6th is a good day for a number of potential service projects listed below. Our overall goal is to relate and interact alumni with potential future students and alumni, creating a network of mentors, partners in hands-on service and engendering a culture of expectations for Life Success. and Lets start here to match interested alumni, materials needed and schedules to plan the day:

Volunteer Activities Include:

- Garden and Grounds Work at Lincoln Temple, Shaw Program Site

* Interview candidates for SCC Annual Scholarship program*

- Painting the Heritage Performance Stage, Doorways and other touch up

- Connect with and Mentor 1st Gen College prospects, explore ongoing service
