Steward the Potomac Heritage Trail, a National Park that lines the Virginia shores of the Potomac River, in a single day clean up that changes the fate of an entire season. Trash from multiple sources fouls the view and trips up the path of hikers, entangles wildlife, smothers native plant growth, and is generally an insult to the park. On May 6 (Saturday; time TBD), fellow Stanford alumni, neighbors, sports teams, and students will choose spots along the trail to steward. Our goal is 100 bags full - split between bags of recyclables and bags of trash. We will share NOAA's Marine Debris Toolkit to educate participants on the negative impacts of trash on marine life, and what citizens can do.

Sub-team leaders will gather in advance to plan and stake out their territories. The project welcomes children ages 5 and up, with parental supervision. All volunteers should come wearing gloves and appropriate footwear. Types of trash anticipated include:

* Cans and bottles

* Convenience food wrappers and containers

* Fishing line

* Cigarette butts

* All sorts of plastic that floats down the river

Participants are asked to bring their own snacks and water bottles (not plastic, preferably).
