    Fiesta Bowl Media Day

You may not know every year the Fiesta Bowl hosts a Media Day, where reporters and photographers from across the country get a chance to talk to players and coaches one on one. Each school represented gets about one hour in front of the cameras, and it kicks off with a special presentation by Glendale Vice Mayor Steve Frate. Check out what Stanford coach David Shaw received: a huge basket of chocolates from Glendale’s own chocolate company, Cerretas.

Quarterback Andrew Luck was on hand of course and had his own platform for interviews:

From here on out the team will be focused on the game!

Fiesta Bowl Fare - Grilled Navajo Tacos

    Grilled Navajo Tacos, Panini Happy

Let’s cheer on our Cardinal as they head down to Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl! Here’s a fun recipe for a grilled twist on an Arizona specialty, Navajo tacos. Traditionally, Navajo tacos feature a combination of beans and/or ground beef and toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cheese all atop crispy fry bread. Since I like to use my panini maker for all kinds of cooking, I’ve opted to grill the fry bread. No panini maker? A regular gas grill will work just as well.

Glendale's Great Adventures for Stanford Fans

Of course you’re here to watch Stanford play in the Fiesta Bowl game – but there are a lot of other cool things to do while you’re here in Glendale.

Some of the very best ideas for the family: a trip to Cabela’s, one of the country’s largest sporting goods and outdoor stores complete with a huge display of (stuffed) animals, a walk through aquarium and a fishing pond. It’s just a block north of the stadium, and almost gets as many visitors as the Grand Canyon!

How about a visit to Wildlife World Zoo? You can see animals from around the world in their natural habitats. The zoo is known for having baby white tigers– check out this cutie!

You can get discounted tickets through the Glendale Convention & Visitors bureau.

A Fiesta Bowl travel guide: What to do and where to eat around Phoenix, as suggested by Stanford alumni

Hey Fiesta Bowl goers, here's a little post-Xmas gift for you: a list of travel tips from a few fellow Stanford alums who know the Phoenix/Glendale area well.

Also check out this handy “Fiesta Top Fives” list on the Stanford Alumni Association’s Fiesta Bowl website, and this Sunset Magazine Glendale day trip, published last December but still pretty much on the mark.

Fiesta Bowl Menu - Cowboy Steak and Beans

Can you believe it? We're off to the Fiesta Bowl! If you are gathering friends to watch what looks to be an epic match-off between our dear Cards and Oklahoma State, here's my take on the perfect game-day menu.

Bone-in ribeye, otherwise known as a "cowboy steak", a nod to our worthy opponents in Oklahoma, which we will be ceremonially eating, by the way, in this menu.

Pinto beans with jalapeños, bacon, and onions, served with salsa, to acknowledge our fine hosts in Glendale, Arizona.

Cool, California avocado slices. Perfect to go with the beans, salsa, and steak.

To drink I recommend a pomegranate and Prosecco bellini, basically sweetened pomegranate juice with Proseco, because it's sophisticated and sparkling cardinal red.

Oh yes, and for a starter or snacks, cranberry-gl...

Sweet Sounds of Sandra Day O'Connor Marching Band

One of the many exciting events around the Fiesta Bowl is the High School Band National Championship. Marching bands face off at the University of Phoenix Stadium for top honors - and this year, the Eagle Pride Marching Band from Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Phoenix (of course Sandra Day O'Connor is a Stanford Alum!) is among the elite bands to compete.

Glendale 11, the city's television station where I work, stopped in at the band's practice - click here to watch a sneak peek of the Eagles:

By the way, the weather is perfect here - game day next Monday is looking around 70 degrees with sunny skies.

    Come visit us in Glendale!

    Sweet "Tree-ts" in Glendale

Among the many things to do and see in Glendale is our very own chocolate & candy factory. The family owned company is called Cerretas, and they've come up with a unique way to celebrate the Stanford Cardinal mascot:

Yes, that's right, a chocolate Tree you can decorate yourself in red and white. That's just one of the many yummy treats available:

So stop by if you're here for the game or check them out online - your taste buds will thank you!

Glendale Goes to Stanford with Fiesta Bowl staff

You may not know that the City of Glendale travels with the Fiesta Bowl staff to the universities to officially welcome the teams playing in the big game. Today I'd like to introduce you to Jen Stein, the Senior Marketing/Communications Manager for Glendale. She's our guest blogger, and had a rather unusual experience at a hotel in Stanford - see below:

"One of the best experiences of working on a Fiesta Bowl is getting to know the teams that are selected. I had the honor of traveling to Stanford with the Fiesta Bowl to meet the wonderful coaches, athletic administration and the alumni staff.  In addition, we had the opportunity to share our information and stories through Stanford’s savvy social media. We answered questions on a facebook chat and shared Fun Fiesta Bowl facts for a You Tube video. Actually, this might be a good place for me to add a correction to one of my facts. So here it is – the amount of concrete used to build the stadium i...

    Fiesta Bowl Adventures in Glendale

Are you ready to Fiesta in Arizona? I’m here to give my perspective on Stanford’s upcoming participation in the Fiesta Bowl on January 2 in Glendale, Arizona.

I have a rather unique take on the event. I’m a Stanford graduate, receiving a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism many moons ago, when we were still shooting on tape and computers took up large rooms. I also work for the City of Glendale, running the city’s television station, Glendale 11, and the Glendale Media Center, which looks out onto the University of Phoenix stadium and will host broadcasters and other media from around the country in the next couple of weeks. Panoramic view of UOP stadium from the Glendale Media CenterLet me say first you will be blown away by the stadium – it’s designed by world renowned archi...
