    Graduation Dinner

Students enjoying themselves at Graduation Dinner

    PENTAX K-7, smc PENTAX-FA 50mm F1.4

I wasn't an undergrad at Stanford, and I'm not familiar at all with the yearly undergrad events, soI was surprised yesterday while riding back from lab to see a bunch of catering trucks around Memorial Church. SInce I was curious and had some time, I swung by and found the Quad filled with undergrads. I asked one of the caterers what the event was, and she replied in somewhat broken English that it was a graduation dinner. I'm not sure if that was her description or if it was the name of the event.

    Stan Shakes "The Tempest"

Stanford Shakespeare Company opened their play "The Tempest" last night. They picked up very unusual spot for their screening: The fountain by the Terman Engineering. At least, I was very puzzled by the venue. Where will they set up the stages, where will the audience sit?

As it turns out, they constructed a stage over the fountain, and used it as "the island" to go along with the story. It was a very innovative idea! Some shots from last nights performance:

    The Farm

As Andy already posted, Stanford Goat Project organized the charity event  'Pet the Goats'. They had goats in the White Plaza! Oh well, for once it felt like "The Farm" in Stanford Campus.
Anyhoo, here are few picks from my camera of the same event. Hope you like them:

    Goats in White Plaza

Goats in a pen in White Plaza

    PENTAX K-7, smc PENTAX-FA 50mm F1.4, 1/800 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 200

I happened to ride past White Paza today to get some cash out of the ATM, when I noticed a small petting zoo on the lawn in-between Old Union and the Bookstore. Turns out the Village Enterprise Fund was fundraising by selling $5 tickets for the chance to mingle and play with the goats.

Fuel Cell and Electric Vehicle Showcase

    Tesla Roadster and the F-Cell

    PENTAX K-7, smc PENTAX-FA 43mm F1.9 Limited, 1/40 @ f/2.8, ISO 1600

Stanford is one of the premier institutions for energy research, and next door to the venture capital hub of the world. As part of a showcase for next generation vehicles powered with alternative energy, several electric and fuel cell vehicles were on display in the basement of the parking structure opposite the new Y2E2 building. Most recognizable of the vehicles was the Tesla Roadster and perhaps for some the Honda Clarity FCX, a fuel cell vehicle available for lease in Southern California.

To be honest, as someone whose research is closely tied to fuel cells and who has studied the market for fuel cell vehicles extensively, nothing was new to me. However, given the number of people who attended, it seemed like the exhibit was a huge, exciting success.

    Stanford's Own Holi Festival

Three images showing the Holi festival fun

    PENTAX K-7, Sigma 70-200 F2.8 HSM II

Around four to five thousand people came to celebrate the Holi festival this Saturday, right on Stanford campus. Put on by Stanford Asha every year to fundraise for their education efforts (my good friend is one of the Asha organizers), Holi is a festival of dancing and color. If you've never been, make sure you come by next year!

    SNAPS 1
    Nikon d40x, Nikkor 18-135mm 1;3-5.6GED, 1/15 sec at f/4.5, ISO 1600

Sigma Nu's Arts and Poetry Slam (SNAPS) is one of my favorite events on campus. Each quarter the fraternity hosts a cappella groups, dance groups, rock bands, poets, and stand-up comedians in this popular arts event. They even provide the audience with warm drinks and snacks like apple cider and ...

    Gaieties 2009: Apocalypse Cal

    Gaieties 1Nikon d40x, Nikkor 18-135mm 1;3-5.6GED, 1/100 sec at f/5.6, ISO 1600

Gaieties is one of Stanford's longest-standing traditions! It is a student-written musical put on every year before Big Game by Ram's Head, a student run theatrical organization. I went on Friday, the traditional freshman night, and MedAud (Memorial Auditorium) was completely packed with students waving their freshman dorm flags and screaming "BEAT CAL!" This year's show was "Apocalypse Cal" and as always, was raunchy, politically incorrect and full of nudity.

Members of the Stanford Axe Committee camped out in White Plaza last week for the "Big Game Countdown." These dedicated students blew the Stanford train whistle every hour for 112 hours leading up the 112th Big Game! Check out axecomm.stanford.edu to learn more about Big Game history and traditions.

    Graduate Halloween

Some snaps at the Rains Halloween party

    Pentax smc PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL IF, 1/30 sec at f/2.8, ISO 3200

Some snaps over the weekend at the Rains Halloween party. Unfortunately, I didn't make it out to the Mausoleum party so all I've got are graduate students in costume.
