Stanford @ Army Important Information

Game day at West Point offers a unique college football experience. Sports Illustrated has rated Army's Michie Stadium one of the top sports venues of the 20th century, thanks in part to its splendid views of the Hudson River Valley. The decades of traditions surrounding Army football provide an "unbelievable moment" for those in attendance, describes ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr.

As an active military installation, West Point comes with a few logistical challenges for football games. Here's the information you need to know in order to enjoy game day:

Transportation / Directions

If you're not staying at West Point for the Stanford @ Army game, there are a number of ways to get to campus on Saturday morning, including:

West Point Driving Directions:

There are three ways to enter West Point, and it's recommended that you attempt to enter the appropriate gate based on where you'll be parking for the game. Information about how to acquire a parking pass can be found below.

If you are driving to the game, we strongly advise an early arrival to avoid long traffic lines. Traffic congestion can begin as early as three to four hours before the noon kickoff.

Public Ferry to West Point:

Seastreak's public ferry to West Point departs Conner's Highlands in Highlands, New Jersey at 8:00 a.m. ET on the morning of Saturday, September 14. The ferry departs Pier 11 in Manhattan at 8:45 a.m. ET, where it will then travel directly to West Point.

Tickets for the Seastreak ferry cost $65 for round-trip transportation to and from West Point, which includes shuttle service from the West Point dock to Michie Stadium. Children three and older require a ticket for the ferry. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 800.262.8743.

FanTravel Ferry Tailgate:

FanTravel, a company started by two former Stanford Football players, is offering a combined ferry trip and public tailgate as part of its transportation package to the Stanford @ Army game.

The ferries will depart Manhattan's Pier 11 at 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. ET and will arrive at West Point in time for pregame festivities. Snacks and beverages (cash bar) will be available for purchase onboard. The Ferries are sold out, but you may subscribe to FanTravel's wait list.

Train:

You can take a train on Metro-North's Hudson Line (green) from midtown Manhattan's Grand Central Station to Garrison, New York, which is directly across the river from West Point. It's recommended that you call ahead to a taxi company in order to arrange a pickup at Garrison (A list of West Point-approved taxi companies can be found here.) Otherwise, it's suggested that you get off two stops earlier at Peekskill, which is much more likely to have taxis available at the station.

Trains depart Grand Central station at :44 past the hour starting at 6:00 a.m. ET. Travel time is approximately 70 minutes to Garrison ($26.50 round trip, if purchased in advance) and approximately 60 minutes to Peekskill ($23.50 round trip, if purchased in advanced). Taxis from both locations to West Point will take approximately 20 minutes, but this is subject to change depending on game day traffic.

It's recommended that you purchase train tickets in advance, as tickets purchased on board are considerably more expensive (and cash-only).

Bus:

Short Line operates a bus that travels from New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal directly to West Point. Round-trip fares cost approximately $30 and tickets can be purchased in person at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Please check Short Line's website for departure times and other information.

Maps / Shuttles / Parking

All vehicles parking at West Point are required to have a parking pass. It's recommended that attendees buy a parking pass in advance, as parking permits are cheaper to pre-purchase ($15) than to buy on game day ($20). West Point provides back-and-forth bus shuttles from its parking lots to the parade ground and Michie Stadium, and all parking lots and shuttles are color-coded (as illustrated below).

Please allow approximately one hour from the time you arrive at the main security gate to enter, park, and take a shuttle to your desired location. Entrance into Michie Stadium will be slower closer to game time. Please allow at least 20-30 minutes walk uphill to the stadium, go through security, and find your seats.

Those purchasing parking passes are asked to enter West Point using the following gates:

  • Green Passes: Thayer
  • Red Passes: Stony Lonesome
  • Blue Passes: Washington
  • Orange (general admission parking passes): enter through Washington or Stony Lonesome Gates and you will be directed to the proper parking area. Fans with general parking passes who require handicap parking and have a handicap license plate or state registration should enter through Stony Lonesome Gate.

Fans wishing to park together must enter the lots at the same time.
